Leaving from Chicago

I will be visiting HH for the first time in Sept. Where is the best place to fly into? HH seems expensive. Savannah? Charlston? Or should we drive? Thanks

Leaving from Chicago

Hilton Head Airport is only served by US Air out of Charlotte.

Savannah airport is near I95 and about a 40 minue drive. United has direct flights from O%26#39;hare.

Charleston is over a two hour drive. When I travel by air I almost always use Savannah.

Leaving from Chicago

If you%26#39;re going to HHI in September, don%26#39;t fly. Drive! But, give yourself an extra day (or two) going and coming back. The scenery is beautiful and there are interesting places to stop on the way -- such as Asheville, where you must see the Biltmore Estate. Also, plan on driving down to Savannah for a day. It%26#39;s a gorgeous old city that is not to be missed.

My wife and I have been visiting HHI for many years, and after flying the first couple of times, we%26#39;ve been driving from Chicago ever since. It%26#39;s much easier to carry the golf clubs and transport home all of the treasures we find to purchase while there.

Enjoy the trip! You%26#39;ll be amazed at the beauty of Hilton Head Island, too.

Regular shuttle service goes from the Savannah Airport to HH. That%26#39;s your best bet. I think it%26#39;s called Low Country Shuttle or something like that. If you are going to rent a car, (good idea) rent it at Savannah and drive to HH.

Thank you to all who replied to my question.

If we fly, we will fly into Savannah since it%26#39;s only a 40 minute drive, but we are leaning more on driving since we have 10-11 days to travel.

PVRLOVER, do you have a favorite route you follow? Thanks.

Hey sal625,

We follow the ';direct'; route, which goes from Chicago to Indianapolis to Cincinnati to Lexington to Knoxville, where we usually spend the night. The next morning we head into the Smoky Mountains toward Asheville, then on to Columbia and finally Hilton Head. We return to Chicago by the same route.

A couple of comments about driving through the mountains, based on personal experience:

1) Be prepared for two extremes - following side-by-side trucks struggling to go uphill and dodging the Mario Andretti wannabees going down.

2) The Smokies deserve their name when the fog reduces visibility - beautiful, but possibly stressful.

3) After dark various critters start crossing the road, making it best to travel during the daylight to avoid hitting them, as well as to savor the beauty of the sunrise.

Have fun!

Thank you for the directions and the good advice. I%26#39;m printing your directions.
