Can anyone tell me what the population of Charleston and the metro area is? Also, how is the transit service in Charleston? Would a car rental be necessary or would we be able to get around the area using the bus services?
About Charleston
There are a little over 1/2 million people in the Charleston area. In Charleston, our public transportation is limited to buses which I personally do not recommend. Whether or not you need a car really depends on your plans while in town. If you%26#39;re planning to just be in the immediate downtown historic area, then you will not need a car (you can take a shuttle or taxi from the airport). However, if you plan to visit any of the plantations, you will need a car...unless you take an organized tour from your hotel and then your transportation would be included. Enjoy your visit!
About Charleston
Transit system is the bus, which is not recommended. There is a downtown trolley that CARTA (the bus line) runs, I think. They transport to all the downtown (historic) areas. You will need a car to get to plantations and any beaches.
Thank you so much for the info. We were in Myrtle Beach last Sept. and several people told us that Charleston was a ';must see';. From the pics we%26#39;ve seen on the internet, we regret not taking a day to go down there. Hopefully we%26#39;ll be able to be there in the near future.
