Which island for best beach with waves?

I am planning our family vacation for July. We want to stay on an island and drive into Charleston for the day for touring and dinner. My husband %26amp; I stayed on IOP several years ago, but I understand it is much more crowded now.

We are looking for a quiet beautiful beach, with some waves, that isn%26#39;t going to break the bank. Last year we stayed on Harbor Island (tip of Hunting Island) and loved it, but there weren%26#39;t any waves at all. We are looking for the same type of feel-quiet, beautiful nature setting, quiet beach, but with some waves to ride in the rafts.

Any advice on North Beach on Seabrook Island? What are the waves on Sullivan%26#39;s Island like?

Any advice?

Thanks very much!

Which island for best beach with waves?

There%26#39;s not many waves on Sullivan%26#39;s Island, but it is a quiet feel. Seabrook is a private Island, so unless you have a pass/stay/live there, you can%26#39;t get to North Beach. Most people who look for waves, go to Folly Beach, but it is NOT quiet.

Which island for best beach with waves?

There just isn%26#39;t the type of surf in the area that has good size waves unless there is a storm or squall out to sea. I think that%26#39;s true for all of the South Atlantic beaches. It%26#39;s something about the shape or slope of the bottom. It%26#39;s also greatly affected by the tides. An outgoing tide has even less wave action than an incoming tide.

I agree~ I am not sure about much wave action around the Charleston beaches unless there is a hurricane or storm off our coast. Most people will tell you Folly Beach for surfing and wave action. The condos or beach house rentals are not too expensive either.

Kiawah has some nice beach, but is often a ';break the bank'; location. Try looking in Southern Living classified section-deals can be had.

IMHO, the beach at Beachwalker County Park http://ccprc.com/index.asp?NID=50 near Kiawah is the best beach in Charleston County.

IOP is nice too, but expensive. As said before, the waves at Folly are the largest in the area, but it isn%26#39;t my favorite place in the Lowcountry.

I guess my bottom line is if you have to be on the beach, pay the bucks-if not, stay somewhere nice and ';inexpensive'; and drive to the beach.

We stayed in an oceanfront condo on Seabrook, and there were no waves (Edisto River). A poster mentioned North Beach (Is this in Seabrook?) - we obviously didn%26#39;t go there, but you can go to any beach on Seabrook if you are staying there. There are beaches on Seabrook that are farther away from the river, but I can%26#39;t vouch for the waves. You can also get a day pass to Kiawah to visit their beaches, but they would be much more crowded. We paid $130/night for a really nice oceanfront condo during peak season. Found out unit on vrbo.com.

Check out wannasurf.com. Actually here%26#39;s the area you%26#39;re looking into..the SE:

You might check on the beaches in other areas too and plan future vacations around the good surf. I understand Tybee Island is a good place.

Coral Beach Room Size?

Planning a trip in June 06 to Myrtle Beach and thinking of staying at the Coral Beach. Its me, my wife and three young adult daughters. Is the one bedroom condos big enough or should we get two rooms? Also, lots of mixed reviews on this hotel. Any comments appreciated

Coral Beach Room Size?

My family and I have stayed at the Coral Beach the past 4 years with a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old.We also normally take a niece or nephew. The rooms are plenty big with 2 beds and a pull down murphy. Also, amenities are great.Large kiddie pool, poolside bar, live band daily and if you dont want to go out at night you can listen to karaoke from your balcony.Hope this helps.

Coral Beach Room Size?

Is the murphy bed suitable for an adult (or two)?

In the br you can get two double beds or a king. The murphy bed is big enough for two adoults also. THe hotel in recently been reonvated and it is VER clean. They have a bowling alley, arcade, 10 pools, general store, resturants and many more things to do there at the resort. I hope you enjoy your stay there

I agreee with the above posts. The one bedrooms are pretty spacious...and Coral Beach has alot to offer...the pool area is great! Its a great hang-out place for the younger set, plus it%26#39;s comfortable enough for the adults. Great live music too!

MB Concierge: you seem to be very informative about Myrtle Beach. So, for me, wife, two adult daughters and a pre-teen, whats the best overall place to stay in June? Looking to be close to attractions, a hotel thats clean, comfortable and fun (possibly entertainment, bar/lounge, etc. We are first timers to MB. The list so far:

1. Coral Beach

2. Hampton Inn

3. Sea Island

4. South Wind Villas

5. Marriott Resort Grande Dunes

Can you provide some wisdom and insight?

Hampton Inn Oceanfront is GREAT!

I will say Coral BEach because it is roomy, clean, and near the pavillion, family kingdom, etc.

Hey Dan,

Well, I answered the other post you had first, so guess you know how I feel about the Sea Island.

I would strongly suggest reading the reviews listed to the left. It really depends on what your family likes to do when they are on vacation. Do you like to go out and explore the area you are in, do you prefer a pool area/lazy river to swimming in the ocean and riding the waves, are you pretty much content with your dining and shopping options on site, or do you like to ';eat where the locals eat';?

Coral Beach does have all the bells and whistles...you just about wouldnt have to leave the property to do anything. Of course most people do, and they are close to The Family Kingdom, and a few small shops and restaurants (a really great Italian nearby --- Villa Romana!)

Hampton Inn OF is in the same general area...what they lack in ';bells and whistles'; they make up in accomodations and staff.

Southwinds is very nice...but more like a condo complex. But the condos are very spacious..only thing is, I dont think the construction next door will be compete by your trip. Dunes Village is expanding and renovating their current building, and the stormwater runoff project has a bit of construction on the beachfront there....that project may be done by June, but not sure.

The Mariott at Grande Dunes is a beautiful property too. It probably would have a bit more to do than the Sea Island..it is currently the only 4 diamond oceanfront resort in our area...Scott at the concierge desk there is great! Especially if your a golfer...he%26#39;s good at knowing condition of the greens, where the good deals are...etc.

You may want to check out the map on our bus system%26#39;s website:

www.golymo.com

it lists where these properties are at along with popular area attractions.

Dan, hope all this helps. Wherever you decide to stay, I think you all will have a great time! There is always sooooo much to do!

:)

MB Concierge

Would you be so kind as to respond to my follow-up posting at Coral Beach Room Size?

Thanks.

Dan,

Consider it done! Hope all the info isnt to overwhelming! Let me know if I can help with anything else!

Quick visit to Charleston for possible relocation

My husband has been interviewing for a job in Charleston. We%26#39;ll be heading down there soon for his final interview but we only have time to make it a quick trip (may not even be a full weekend). I%26#39;d like to get a feel for both the Charleston area and some neighborhoods while there. Are there certain ';must-sees'; when exploring Charleston (not necessarily for touristy things but to really get a feel for the city)? If we have time to explore neighborhoods, what would you recommend? To give you a bit of background, we are in our early/mid 30%26#39;s, both work in marketing, no kids yet, love outdoor activities like hiking, biking, beach, etc and would probably look to spend about $350K on a house.

On a different note, I%26#39;m wondering about culture shock coming from New England? Are the locals welcoming to us yankees? :)

Quick visit to Charleston for possible relocation

With your budget, you may want to look in the Mt. Pleasant area (about 15 minutes from downtown) and close to the beaches. You should be able to find something nice within your price range and when you do have kids, the schools in that part of Charleston are pretty good (just to let you know SC public schools are pretty below par in comparison to the rest of the country...only Mississippi is lower than us...YIKES!) but we do have some great private schools in the area.

You could also find something very nice in Summerville (about 30 minutes to downtown depending on traffic it will be more) and if you find something in District 2, you will have good schools. Summerville is a quaint town (I grew up there and it has grown over the years but still has the town feel to it)...something about it reminds me of Lexington, MA.

I guess where you live depends on where you%26#39;ll work and how much commuting matters to you. I personally prefer Mt. P because just about everything is on that side of town (something you would never have said 10-15 years ago but that side of town has grown like crazy and continues to every day).

As far as welcoming to Yankees...there are so many of you Yanks down here now that Charleston doesn%26#39;t seem as ';Southern'; to me as it did when I was growing up here (since high school, I%26#39;ve lived in DC, Baltimore, Chicago, LA, and Boston before returning home 3 years ago). When I moved back home from Boston, I was amazed at the number of MA tags I saw driving around and it seems like almost week I meet someone from Boston or other parts of MA.

Depending on where you%26#39;re coming from in MA, you could have some culture shock...I did moving back home. After living in Boston, it was hard to come back to a small town and all the things associated with small towns. While downtown Charleston is a walking area, Charleston as a whole is not a walking city...living in Boston, I rarely drove my car as you could literally walk just about everywhere or take the T. Unfortunately that%26#39;s not the case here...and I personally don%26#39;t recommend the bus system in spite of fact my tax money is paying for a portion of it. If you%26#39;re coming from a smaller town, I don%26#39;t think the shock will be as big. One of the things you%26#39;ll probably appreciate the most will be NO SNOW SHOVELING!! While Charleston and Boston are very different, there are a lot of similarities in my opinion. I always felt like Boston was just a giant version of Charleston as Boston just feels like a town to me (I really loved that about Boston...you knew you were in a big city but yet still felt like you were in a town), there%26#39;s the amazing history of both areas, and there%26#39;s definitely the ';old'; families of Charleston and the society just like Boston.

The nightlife in Charleston for people our age is not as grand as Boston but again, if you%26#39;re coming from a smaller town, you may be used to that. I think that was the biggest thing for me...Boston is more ';single'; friendly but Charleston is great if you%26#39;re married.

This really is a great place to live and raise a family! Best wishes with the interview and the move decision!

Quick visit to Charleston for possible relocation

Travelgirl nailed it square on-I couldn%26#39;t add much. $350K won%26#39;t buy as much in Mt Pleasant as it would a few years ago, but it%26#39;ll still get you in. The proximity to Downtown and the beaches on Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island are worth every dime. The schools are pretty good too-for South Carolina...if you ever need them. You may also want to check out James Island-it%26#39;s a very nice area too???

You won%26#39;t have any problem being welcomed-for the most part! There are still a few who won%26#39;t let go of ';The Recent Unpleasantness.'; Remember, Charleston is the last civilized place on Earth! Truth is, most of the locals will more than welcome you and those who don%26#39;t, really do, but won%26#39;t admit it!

Hope everything works out the way you want it to.

My parents just bought a house in South Carolina near the North Carolina border. We visited for a week in December, and found everyone to be nice and friendly. Cashiers are actually happy to wait on you, and on Cape Cod where I live I just don%26#39;t get that anymore. Must be the warmer weather!

We only allow NICE Yankees to move here! LOL.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, it%26#39;s very helpful. It%26#39;s good to know that we would be welcomed even if we do come from the north!

Travelgirl, we live in the outer suburbs of Boston, about a 40 minute drive to the city so we don%26#39;t have easy access to downtown Boston although we go in on a semi-regular basis. I%26#39;m not concerned about nightlife too much so that%26#39;s ok (we%26#39;re pretty boring at night!).

If my husband got this job he would be working on Daniel Island which seems to be very convenient to Mt. Pleasant. It sounds like this is a great town (perhaps the equivalent to Newton near Boston???), one that we were already looking at online. We talked a lot about whether it would make more sense to spend less and cut our mortgage payment from what we%26#39;re paying here but still live a bit further away or keep the payment the same and live in a really nice area close to the city. I think we%26#39;re leaning toward the latter since we would never have that option up here with the prices as crazy as they are. I guess we won%26#39;t know for sure until we check out the areas. We may venture out towards Summerville just to consider that as another option if we want to get more for our money.

I have yet to hear a bad thing about the Charleston area so I%26#39;m keeping my fingers crossed. How nice it would be to escape the snowy winters here!!! If it works out, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll see a lot more posts from me in the future.

I had a feeling it was Daniel Island...seems to be where most folks are working that are looking to relocate down here. DI is a beautiful little island that has more of a town feel than an island feel. If you can swing it, I would go with Mt. P as the drive from S%26#39;ville would be pretty rough with rush hour traffic here. I don%26#39;t know as much about the real estate market in town (I move so much it%26#39;s hard to get me to stay in one place long enough to buy something) but I%26#39;ve seen listings for places in Park West or Dunes West(both in Mt. P) that seem like they%26#39;d fit within your budget. If you have time before you visit, try to arrange to meet with a real estate agent on this trip as they would really be able to point in the best direction with regards to your budget and personal situtation.

As far as not hearing bad things about Charleston...glad to hear it! Of course no town is perfect so we do have our challenges. Since it is really a subjective issue, I think it%26#39;s best for people to form their own opinions. You%26#39;re probably already planning to but while you%26#39;re visiting, pick up a copy of our local paper ';Post and Courier'; and watch the local news, that will give you a better idea of the life in Charleston.

Best wishes and let us know if you end up here!

Wow, excellent replies from everyone. I liked bud%26#39;s comment about ';nice'; yankees ;-))

My wife works on Daniel Island and we live West of the Ashley; suffice it to say that she absolutely hates the commute. It seems that every day there is an accident or some kind of delay that just eats at you while your trying to get to work.

So in your case, I%26#39;d definitely look at Mt. Pleasant and the area on that side of the Cooper River. There are so many neighborhoods being built up there that I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll find something suitable.

And like travelgirl said, our school system leaves a bit to be desired (thank God for Mississippi). Wando High, just north of Mt. P (as fast as that town is growing, it will be downtown soon), is a fine school. I would have no problems sending my son there.

Enjoy your visit!

350K price range in Mt. Pleasant is a tight market. Best thing to do is have a realtor ready and waiting to pounce on homes as soon as they become available onto the market. Homes get snapped up pretty quickly there.

I once drove 4 hours to view a home that was available that morning only to have it under contract by the time I arrived in town. Very frustrating to say the least. You might even want to consider renting a home for a while before you buy so you can be in town for showings.

Thanks everyone. I have two more quick questions. First, it sounds like the real estate market is booming down there but just curious on your thoughts on this. Right now, it has really flattened out up here in Boston. Would you think that investing in a home in Mt. Pleasant would give us a good return in the future since it seems to be growing a lot or is real estate leveling off down there as well?

Also, I%26#39;ve talked to a few places about jobs for myself. One was in North Charleston and the other was right downtown. Would the commute to either of these places be ok from this area? Sounds like traffic is an issue down there although I%26#39;d be hard pressed to think it%26#39;s any worse than Boston! Maybe that%26#39;s just wishful thinking though. :)

Mount Pleasant gets pretty congested. They are working on a new road system to ease things but that will probably take a while. First they have to get past arguing what the best solution is! The commute to downtown or North Charleston would be okay from there in answering your question, not traffic free by any means though.

You might want to check out this site: realtytimes.com/rtmcrstate/South_Carolina

It might help you a little to what is going on around here in the real estate market.

    MBConcierge,

Is this Carolina Grande hotel I%26#39;ve been reading about a new place? What, if anything, have you heard about it? Rates seem too-cheap-to-be-true for a mid-June stay in a brand new hotel ($124 a night)... thanks!

    -Rooster

    Carolina Grande hotel

For some reason I cant place it...guess I need to go for a drive, huh? I do know (by the address) that the area is not a bad area, in the 21st corridor area, and it is across the street from the beach...so it NOT oceanfront...but that is a good rate for that time of year...I%26#39;ll check and get back to you..ok??

    :)

    Carolina Grande hotel

I looked at this website since it was mentioned and I noticed in was a Blue water Resort or whatever was the owner. THey bought out the Yatchsman Resort and they are in the process of changeing its name to Seaglass towers or something like that but the point of this is that the company probaly bought it and changed out the name. THat is just a guess

Thanks, it looks to be about 25th Ave. N - the only reason it really interested me is that it%26#39;s opening late Feb, the rooms look spacious and as the other poster mentioned its owned by Bluegreen who just bought the Yachtsman (one of my favorites in MB)... appreciate it, thanks!

Help - Best motel/condo for a Teen and Us !

I would like a clean 1 bedroom suite with a indoor lazy river and pool and a heated outdoor pool if possible. Also other ammenities so that a 14 year old girl %26amp; friend can be amused while we%26#39;re at the motel.

I am going crazy looking at the different motels they all have something but not everything, I figured someone might know of one or two that have everything I want

    Thanks!!!

Help - Best motel/condo for a Teen and Us !

Well this anit all hte things that yuo want included because you are missing the indoor lazy river and the OD heated pool. Th hotel is Coral Beach Resort. It is the CLEANEST hotel in MB. There are many things to do in the hotel so there is no reason to have to leave at all. They have indoor pools and spas, arcade, bowling alley, general sotre, resturants, gym, and many more things to do. We stay there every year with two kids around the same age and they stay pretty occupied. The rooms are also very spacious. I hope this helps

is kiwah island too far to day or evening visits to...

My husband has a meeting at the Santuary on Kiwath Island in March. We were planing to stay 5 nights at the Santuary 2nights Charlston and two in Savanah. How easy is it to get to Charlston from Kiwath? We are now thinking of Kiwath for 7 nights and doing a few day and evening excursions to Charlston. If we stay in Charlston can anyone advise me on the french quarter Inn or Planters Inn. I would want a good walking location along with an upscale bathroom and a spacious room or suite. Charm and cleanlines are a prioity. Along with good service. I would appreciate any help.

is kiwah island too far to day or evening visits to...

It%26#39;s an easy 30-45 minute drive. French Quarter/Planters Inns%26#39; are both excellent choices-neither should dissapoint. Staying at the Sanctuary for all 7 is a wonderful option too-the drive is easy to all Lowcountry attractions from there.

is kiwah island too far to day or evening visits to...

    I agree completely with airmerc!

But if you%26#39;re Googling or researching on the internet, make sure you spell it right - it%26#39;s Kiawah. Maybe that will help some.

March is a great time to be in Charleston; shoot, it%26#39;s always a good time to be here!! ;-)

I would spend the 7 nights at The Sanctuary on Kiawah. Downtown Charleston is a very easy drive, so you could go there for sightseeing and lunch, then back to Kiawah to spend the afternoon on the beach.

I%26#39;ll chime in and agree that staying at Kiawah is the best idea! The Sanctuary is amazing and the island itself is so relaxing. While it is a little drive into Charleston, I think the tranquility of Kiawah is worth it. See if you can get an ocean front room...you%26#39;ll never want to leave!

If you and your husband are golfers, you%26#39;ll be in golf heaven as the island has 5 public courses...they also have 2 unbelievable private courses but those are only open to members. My favorite public course at Kiawah is the Ocean Course...site of 2003 World Cup, 2007 Senior PGA Championship and the 2012 PGA Championship.

Or better yet, let your husband hit the links and you hit the spa at the Sanctuary! I can%26#39;t think of a better way to spend the day than be pampered!

    Enjoy your visit!

Thank you all for the advice. We were planning on playing tennis and golf on Kiawah. But I recently broke my leg I should be in a walking cast by then, but was thinking staying in the heart of Charlston for two nights for the convience of less walking. Also does anyone have any suggustions for kayacking in the area? Also one really nice restaurent and one casual and fun with some music?

    Thanks

My husband and I vacationed on Seabrook Island last summer. It is just south of Kiawah (5 minutes). Both are gated and share the same shopping complex. We stayed in an oceanfront condo, and it was fabulous. We drove through Kiawah one day, and while it was a lot more crowded, it was very nice. On our beach in Seabrook, there was a lady and her small dog (so cute!) who would kayak every day. The water on our end of the island was very calm, because it was located right where the Edisto River spills out. Also, a group of kayakers (seemed to be guided) came through as we were wading one afternoon. There is an outdoor/sporting goods store located in Freshfields Village (the shopping center) that may offer these tours. I believe they rent kayaks as well. You will have a wonderful time. I can%26#39;t vouch for Kiawah, but we saw so many deer during our vacation. One night when we were returning from Charleston, there was a group of eight right outside our condo%26#39;s front door. While we have deer back home, I have never seen any right on the beach. An amazing experience...

Kayaking is one of our favorite Kiawah activities. Kayak, canoe, and other nature tours are available through The Sanctuary as part of their nature program. I think they use double (two-seat) kayaks for the tours. They also rent single and double kayaks to individuals.

If you want a more customized tour, call Tidal Trails at (843)768-5680. Tidal Trails regularly does kayak tours of the Kiawah River and the tidal creeks for the Kiawah Property Owners Group. They are excellent!

Both Charleston hotels you mention are wonderful. Also, consider The Mills House Hotel (www.millshouse.com), which is extremely convenient for touring and very comfortable. As well, Charleston has beautiful, luxurious bed and breakfasts. Charleston is a manageable city, and the gardens will be lovely in March. Have a nice time!

Do I need a car if I'm staying at the Holiday Inn (Historic...

If you go to the Charleston CVB website you%26#39;ll see lots of links for tour companies such as Grayline which can arrange the tours you are looking for. Theoretically you could get by without a car. But, if you want to go to one of the beaches ( such as Folly or Isle of Palms) you%26#39;ll need one. Cab fare for four days would be too expensive. I think a car rental would be less expensive than relying on other transporation. Best wishes.

Do I need a car if I'm staying at the Holiday Inn (Historic...

I agree with previous post re: the availability of tour companies but if you have your own car you can tour at your leisure rather than the time constraints of an organized tour. Unlike the DC area, cabs are not easily accessible in Charleston (esp. at the plantations) and must be called for service so you loose time waiting on taxis. Enjoy your visit!

Thank you both. That%26#39;s the feedback I was looking for.

Just to follow up on my trip, I decided not to rent a car after all. I didn%26#39;t have any problems with cabs. The hotel arranged for one of the courtesy wagons to take me back and forth to the Dock Street Theater one night (cost $10 r/t before tip) and I used Yellow Cab a few other times at night. I never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a cab, but I suspect it has to do with the time of year.

As for the tours, I agree that without a car, I was at the mercy of the tour drop off and pick up times, but it ended up being fine for me. Since I was alone, I got to do the tour with other people.

They picked me up from my hotel and drove me to my plantation tour, then took me back to my hotel. With some of the plantations, they actually do the tour with you, other plantations they drop you off and pick you up. The cost for the tour, admittion and bus was only a few dollars more than driving there myself. It was a great deal and the drivers are very knowledgeable and personable.

    Question/ too many?

How can 5 people stay at Holiday Inn Express broadway @ the beach?

    Question/ too many?

I am not sure what you are asking. Do you want to know if Holiday Inn has accomodations to sleep five in one room, or a suite with enough beds to sleep five?

I think your best bet would be to ask the management what they have available at the time you want to go.

  • Nice Resturant in Isle of Palms

My husband and I will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express for our 2nd anniv. during Memorial Day weekend. We would like to go somewhere really nice for dinner that night. Any suggestions?

Nice Resturant in Isle of Palms

The answer depends on whether you want to stay on the Island or would be willing to go in to Chareston (about 25 minute drive).

On the Isle of Palms, the best restaurant is probably The Boat House on the south end of the island (overlooking Breach Inlet). It will be very busy that weekend, so you MUST get reservations. It can also get a little loud in the main dining room, which may be a turnoff for an anniversery dinner.

If you want something elegant and quiet with food that is almost as good, try the restaurant in the Boardwalk Hotel at the Wild Dunes Resort (I don%26#39;t remember the name, but call any wild dunes resort number and they can tell you and connect you) again- reservations are a must.

You have virtually unlimited options if you want to go into Charleston.

Penninsula Grille is very nice as is Magnolia%26#39;s. For trendy/swanky, try Cypress.

Let me know if you have any specific questions regarding menu offerings. Most of the above have good variety, but also some good local seafood options.

Have a great anniversery and enjoy the IOP. Please be aware that that will be a busy weekend, so traffic on (9-11am) and off (2-4pm) the island may be busy on the Isle of Palms Connector bridge. Remember that you can go South down Sullivan%26#39;s Island as an alternate route.

Nice Resturant in Isle of Palms

I would suggest Morgan Creek Grill. It has great food and a view to die for, overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway and the Marina. It is upscale, but not too expensive. It has a separate bar area if you would like to arrive early and have a drink before dinner. It%26#39;s at 41st Avenue, at the Marina. Happy Anniversary!

    Seafood resturant in Beaufort

There is a seafood resturant in Beaufort, which is a buffet style, and is near the marsh or river. I can%26#39;t remember the name. I need to call them for a price list before an upcoming trip to the low country. If anyone can give me the name, I would certainly appreciate it. I think it is somewhere close to the turn off which goes toward Paris Island. Thanks in advance. Danny

    Seafood resturant in Beaufort

The restaurant you are asking about was called Broad River Seafood. It closed down.

    Pametto Bugs

Are these really everywhere? Like in hotel beds and stuff?

    Pametto Bugs

Call them roaches. That%26#39;s what they are. yes, some hotels and even the better homes will have them from time to time, no matter how hard they try not to. The wicked little things seem to just appear from no where. The farther South you go, the more likely you are to find them. They are a fact of life. It doesn%26#39;t always mean that the place is dirty. They are sort of like all the other insects. They were there first. We are trying to live in their space.

Now having said that, I will say that I have NEVER seen one in a well run motel/hotel.

And no matter how I try, or how often we have the house sprayed, sometimes one will creep in from outside and crawl around the floor or fly around the room. Ugh!!

    Pametto Bugs

That%26#39;s good. I am staying at the Holiday Inn in the Historic District and I didn%26#39;t see any mention of them in any of the user reviews, but Rachel Ray%26#39;s $40 a Day book says they are everywhere and I just wanted to know what I was getting into.

VaBelle: you are most likely to see the Palmetto Bugs at night...they are nocturnal creatures. They are typically out during the more humid months...April - October. While you may see them in the hotel, it is not a sign of filth. As a general rule, if the bug is big, it%26#39;s a Palmetto bug (local legend is it%26#39;s our ancestors checking on us), if it is small, it%26#39;s a roach which indicates lack of cleaniless.

One thing we do during the bug months is make sure our drains are always closed when we are not using them. So if you can close the drain on your bathroom sink and tub, you may want to do as a preventative measure.

It%26#39;s all just part of the charm of traveling in the South!

FYI: Just got back from Boardwalk Inn at Isle of Palms - nice, upscale hotel. Had 2 of the bugs in our bathroom one night. Yes, they can be anywhere. No big deal.

You often see herds of them running along the street/sidewalk at night in the warm months. I lived downtown many years and now live on IOP. I have always had the house sprayed monthly, so usually if I see one indoors it is dead. When there is alot of rain they seem to try to get inside, hate to be wet, I guess! I have never seen one in a bed, hotel or otherwise. They are usually scared and scurry away when lights come on or you approach them. I wouldn%26#39;t worry about it too much.

palmetto bugs are cockroaches. big or small, thats south carolinas way to make it sound better.

At least palmetto bugs don%26#39;t bite or anything. They are just creepy, and you should get used to them.

Just to follow up on my trip, I didn%26#39;t see a single bug anywhere. Must be the time of year.

Definitely one of the advantages of cold weather...no bugs! Hope you enjoyed your trip!

Over the years I%26#39;ve developed some sympathy for the Palmetto Bugs. Unlike creepy little northern roaches, Palmetto Bugs would much rather be outside than inside. Although they move fairly fast, they%26#39;re no match for a human with a big shoe in hand! Don%26#39;t let them bother you.

    Charleston Holiday Inn

    Hello fellow travelers.

Has anyone had success in getting around Charleston Holiday Inn%26#39;s 2 night min stay on the weekend? I tried to book a Saturday night in March but without any luck.

Or perhaps there is a comparable hotel you might recommend.

    Thank you so much.

    Charleston Holiday Inn

With all the activities going on in March (Food and Wine Festival on Mar 2 - 5 and the House and Gardens Tour beginning on Mar 16), most places in town will more than likely have minimum stay requirements for the weekends.

    Charleston Holiday Inn

Thank you for the heads-up. I didn%26#39;t know so much was going on in March. We are flying into Charleston on March 25th before heading to Kiwah Island for the week. I thought we would stay overnight in Charleston making our way to the Island. Looks like I%26#39;ll have to start working the phones.

    Thanks again.

Staying overnight in Charleston is a fine idea, but really unnecessary unless you just want the experience. Kiawah is not that far at all from Charleston. It%26#39;s only about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

    Floski,

Thank you for your response. I was hoping to spend the night to experience Charleston before going Kiwah. Also meet friends who would travel to Charleston from their town which is further south.

Any thoughts about a hotel for a night?

If you can%26#39;t turn up something you like in Charleston, consider having your friends meet you at Kiawah, which also is south of Charleston, and driving into town for the evening. The drive from Kiawah to Charleston is relaxing - 45 minutes on slow but picturesque local roads. Public parking in Charleston is well-located and inexpensive.

Check out Orbitz and see what comes up. Here%26#39;s a couple places that may be available for 1 night...Doubletree Historic District (on Church Street) and the Mills House (on Meeting Street). The Mills House (www.millshouse.com) is a Holiday Inn property but you%26#39;d never know it as there%26#39;s nothing saying Holiday Inn...it%26#39;s a little more upscale than a typical HI. Anything with Harborview as a location is not going to be close to the ';historic'; area for walking but a quick car ride to that area.

    Enjoy your visit!

I just bought a timeshare at the Sheraton Broadway...

I was on Ebay and got a terrific deal on this 2 bdrm timeshare. I have never been to Myrtle Beach, but my husband and I love to golf.

I realize this timeshare is not on the beach, and I was hoping that I didn%26#39;t make a mistake in purchasing it? Does anyone know anything about this timeshare?

    Thanks

I just bought a timeshare at the Sheraton Broadway...

It%26#39;s hard to find anything bad about all the beautiful new properties in such a lovely temperate area as Myrtle Beach. I think I might have spied your property on one of our visits to Broadway at the Beach a few months ago. It%26#39;s right across the street. There%26#39;s always something going on entertainment-wise and restaurant-wise at Broadway at the Beach for evening activities. Myrtle Beach is fabulous for golf and sooo popular. We bought our home in central Virginia from someone building a home inland a bit from Myrtle Beach and many many friends have condos there or built homes there to retire to. These people are serious golfers and just love it there.

One could probably stay there for months and not do everything there is offered.

    Did you check out: starwoodvo.com/resorts/welcome.jsp?resortID=8

There are lovely photos, map and directions and even a link to click on so you can see the recent construction photos.

You%26#39;ll be just a mile from the beach too...not bad at all.

By the way, May has bike fests, in particular on over Memorial Weekend which is very very busy so you might type in bike week in the little search box at the top of the topics here and look at those posts.

    Have a great time!

I just bought a timeshare at the Sheraton Broadway...

Beautiful property and constantly growing! Seems like the timeshare industry here just really has taken off. The Sheraton Broadway is within walking distance to Broadway at the Beach (www.broadwayatthebeach.com), and as far as the beach, maybe 2 miles. For golf, you are really close to Myrtlewood (2 courses) and the Granddaddy ---Pine Lakes.

Any property purchases in this area are not a mistake! Its booming!

My husband and I bought a 2 bedroom unit there 6 years ago and we absolutly love it. So much so, that we have bought an additional week that we can use to go to the other resorts.

We have spent every year there and always find it very relaxing and fun. There are plenty of things to do in the area and as resort owners you will be able to get discounted tickets for many of the attractions including golf packages.

You have made a very wise decision. The resort is kept up and the staff has always been pleasant.

    Enjoy

Thank you all for your feedback. My husband and I are looking forward to our first trip to Myrtle Beach.

After reading your replies, and checking further into the Sheraton, we feel good about our purchase.

Trip Advisor has been a great source of information on Myrtle Beach. I will continue to do my research since I still need to find out much about the area.

Thanks again for your help, and happy vactioning to all.

We will be here the last week of April %26amp; hope we will be happy. As we usually trade the week we own here in Ontario for a week in the Caribbean so it will be a big change for us.

Hubby %26amp; son-in-law are hoping to get in 2-3 rounds of golf. Can anyone recommend a couple of good (not too expensive) courses %26amp; give their input as to whether they should book now????

I think you%26#39;ll enjoy your week!

Spot, you might type in the little search box just about the posts....golf courses and click go. It will bring up several posts from others re golf courses they have enjoyed.

Thanks explorer3....I had forgotten about the search option....just checked it out....

Congratulations!! I will be exchanging into a 2br in May and looking forward to it. You may want to check into 2 different forums. The first one is TUG. (Timeshare Users Group) Since you are new to ts you can ask questions and most importantly check out the reviews. It cost $15 a year but will be the best $15 you ever spent. If you would like to tell them you heard about it from me I will get 6 more mos to my membership. Everyone there knows me as Shaggy / or Shagnut. Now guess where I got that name from? Yes, shagging at MB. www.tug2.net The 2nd is www.timeshareforums.com This one is free and most of us are active in both. Feel free to ask questions on both forums. If you like to write about your travels there is a forum called Share you memories with Shaggy (Guess who) Enjoy MB. Absolutely everone has written good things about this ts. Shaggy

I forgot to mention that I would not know what to do without this forum as well as the other 2. So many of us tuggers are part of this forum as well. Traveling has been the best part of my life and it never grows old. shaggy

  • Myrtle Beach Hotels

My family will be vacationing in Myrtle Beach this summer. Looking for suggestions on where to stay. Would like to be within walking distance to most things. Looking for moderately priced, clean and friendly. Any suggestions would be helpful, as I%26#39;m overwhelmed at this point based on the reviews I continue to read. Thanks, cat

    Myrtle Beach Hotels

You cant be within walking distance to most things.A hotel like the Breakers would put you in about 8 blocks of the start of the Pavillion area.Lots of congestion in this area, some like it ,I don%26#39;t.

Theres about 3 or 4 hotels within walking distance of Broadway At The Beach but you%26#39;ll have to drive to get to the ocean.

From Shorecrest,Beach Cove and Ocean Creek its about a 10 minute walk to Barefoot Landing.

SO as you see you cant have it all.I always suggest the area of Myrtle Beach between 52nd and 79th.Long Bay,Caravelle,Grande Shores,Forest Dunes and for more money the brand new Marriot are in this area.Great central location an easy drive to all attractions but within walking distance of none. But with residential areas all around this area a great opportunity for joggers and walkers.

    Myrtle Beach Hotels

Yes, Myrtle Beach is NOT a walking town. Too much traffic and highways to cross. Everything is spread out, however it only takes about 10-15 minutes to drive to most attractions or resturants if your hotel is centrally located as the poster above stated.(and that IS a very nice neighborhood that they suggested) And everything is very easy to find so don%26#39;t worry about driving around.

Thanks - I guess I was thinking MB might be like Virginia Beach. VB had their strip of shops/restaurants/etc. right near the beach by the hotels.

Should I look at hotels at the quieter end?Any comments on the Coral Beach Resort. I do have two girls(15 %26amp; 17). Don%26#39;t want them to get bored. Thanks again!

Coral Beach is not in what would be considered a quiet section but it is definitely far enough away from the Pavillion area. I consider this a great place to stay with teens.

When not traveling with teens %26amp; college kids I prefer to stay much further north. It is quieter there.

Looking for a recommendation for a 3 bedroom villa at...

We will be returning to Kiawah Island Resort in May and I would like a recommendation for a specific unit to request for a 3 bedroom villa in Seascape. Does anyone know of a 3 bedroom oceanview unit that is well kept, clean and nicely furnished that I can request rather than taking a chance on getting put in a unit that is run down?

Looking for a recommendation for a 3 bedroom villa at...

All of the resort units are rated according to the condition and quality of the unit. Just ask for a 5 Star or 4 Star unit and you should be assured of the quality you are looking for.

Looking for a recommendation for a 3 bedroom villa at...

The Kiawah Island Resort has become increasingly choosy about the units they will manage, so you are generally pretty safe when renting through them. The location and view are what you should be most concerned about.

That said, the Resort%26#39;s new ';top'; rating is called ';Premier';. These units are extremely ';up to date';, generally with remodeled kitchens and bathrooms, and are very well furnished. They also cost a bit more to rent.

The Resort has a few Premier villas is every area of the island. If you tell the reservationists that you are interested in a Premier villa, they will tell you what is available.

    Where to stya????

I grew up in SC and went to Myrtle beach at least once a year, now i%26#39;m returning with my boyfriend in tow. He%26#39;s never been to myrtle beach and i would really like to show him the older parts of it. While the big hotels are really cool, I%26#39;m more interested in staying in one of the smaller dumpier motels. That being said, is there one that is nice-ish (i don%26#39;t want to stay with bugs and such). I am looking at the Waikiki Village, but just realized it%26#39;s not on the beach...

    Any ideas?

    Where to stya????

Try the Beachcomber Inn %26amp; Suites. 800-262-2113. It is a smaller hotel, nothing fancy but definately clean!

    Where to stya????

Cherry Tree Inn on 54th in the northern section of Myrtle Beach.

Cherry Tree Inn on 54th in the northern section of Myrtle Beach.

Yep...The Cherry Tree or even the Mariner (across the street from the beach at 70th N. ) I would suggest the Aloha...but it just bit the dust less than two months ago..Another one just came to mind, The Pier View (on 2nd Ave) not much to look at...but clean, and the balconies are great! Nice that you want to show him the older aspects of the beach!

    We loved Myrtle Beach

I guess I don%26#39;t have any questions for you at the moment, just a few comments. Last summer I had gotten on the message boards of Myrtle Beach Online. I asked a LOT of questions and everyone was so friendly and kind. Well, in Sept. we flew to MB and just loved it there. The people were all so friendly and although we didn%26#39;t take in any of the wonderful places that we%26#39;d read about, we had a wonderful, relaxing time just playing in the ocean and walking on the beach. Unfortunately, I must%26#39;ve been allergic to some weed there cause I had to spend one of the days in bed at the motel so I%26#39;m not sure if we%26#39;ll be brave enough to venture back there. But we were so impressed by the friendliness of the people and the laid back atmosphere. The palm trees and the ocean were just wonderful. Just wanted to share this with you.

    We loved Myrtle Beach

Thanks for sharing with us,unfortunitly most people dont return any feedback.

    We loved Myrtle Beach

So glad to hear that you had a good time! And thats why I used to come to the beach...it wasnt about all the attractions, or the shows, or even the food...it was the BEACH...

    Thanks for sharing! :)

    May 20 - 25 Crowd?

We are staying at Coral Beach May 20 thru the 25. Is it really crowded? Will we miss bike week?

    May 20 - 25 Crowd?

I just looked at there website and the dates are May 12-21. The hotel choice you made is great!!! That is were we all ways stay at.

The forums I%26#39;ve read said they are coming for Memorial day weekend (as they normally do). I was just hoping it wouldn%26#39;t be too croweded....just before Memorial Day and kids still in school.

I%26#39;ve read a lot of good things about Coral Beach. My son just moved to Myrtle Beach last September and I%26#39;m anxious to visit and relax on the beach.

Coral beach has things to do for many ages. They have a bowling alley, 10 pools, arcade, game room, resturants, pool side bar, karoke, comedy club and is very close to the family kingdom and not to far from the pavilion.

cbr guest, I was just wondering if you worked for Coral Beach??

No. My family and I just think that is the best hotel in MB and that is the only place we stay now. I think I might be over reacting about it a little bit though.

lovedasun, I am wondering the same thing?!?

I the little search box just on top of your post you might type in bike week and look at what was recently discussed to get a feel for it.

You wont miss Harley week totally...with those dates you will be here on the Saturday of Harley week (hate to say one of the busiest of the rally)...Most Harleys leave out on Sunday. The bikers for Memorial day usually start coming in on the Thursday prior to Memorial day...

    Maisons-sur-mer condos

Does anyone have ant input on a development called Maisons-sur-mer?

What part of MB is this?

    north or south?

    Maisons-sur-mer condos

Looks like it is in the northern part of Myrtle Beach, but not NORTH Myrtle Beach.

    check out this website:

    www.myrtlebeachcondo.com

    and click on Maisons-sur-mer

It looks like a very nice place. And that area is nice too. Not crowded.

hmmm, I may have to check into this place myself. Thanks;)

    Maisons-sur-mer condos

This hotel is extremely upscale and the views on the higher floors are some of the best in M.B.with some overlooking the Dunes Golf Course. The one drawback is getting in and out of this area in peak summmer months.Theres only 2 ways out to 17 . One is by Galleria Shopping center and the other is by Walmart and Tanger Outlet stores and the traffic around dinner time can be a horror story.Sloan Realty could probably set you up with rentals.Ask for Esther.

    bump

The Maisons is a very nice (upscale) property...but, as TonyMik eluded to, a very tricky one to get in and out of...basically one road leading into the Shore Drive area with a stop light at Rt 17 that, if you dont hit it just right, will take you forever to get out! Another issue there is the beachfront...it wasnt part of the most recent beach renorishment project, so not much of a beach at high tide.

To MBConcierge: I have to differ with your comment regarding the beach along Shore Drive. If you remember the last beach restoration was for Shore Drive. I can%26#39;t remember the exact year but I would say that work was completed in 2000 or 2001 and there is plenty of beach along Shore Drive. You should drive out there sometime! The traffic you refer to isn%26#39;t that bad either.

  • Condo or house - 4 or 5 bedroom

We are planning another vacation in Myrtle Beach.

Our previous one was several years ago and we stayed at a hotel on the beach.

This year we want a family reunion with at least 8 adults and 2 children.

I have been looking but tht choices are overwhelming.

Can someone recommend a condo or beach house that would sleep that many or at least recommend a reputable company.

    Thanks so much.

Condo or house - 4 or 5 bedroom

Look at Crescent Shores in North Myrtle on vrbo.com; the bedrooms are large and some have 2 queen beds per bedroom. There are also some nice vacation homes in the area.

Condo or house - 4 or 5 bedroom

Thanks, I will check them out right now.

Check out Barefoot Resort North Tower. They have 3 and 4 bedroom condos with 2 masters. Now they are not on the beach but rather on a waterway, right behind Barefoot Landing. I have not stayed here yet but we rented a condo for June and I can not wait. Oh and the pool looks AWSOME!!!

Elliott Realty probably has the largest selection of 4-5 bedroom (or even more) condos or houses (beachfront, 2nd row, etc..), so you will have lots of options/price ranges. Typically, 5-7 pictures of each unit. I%26#39;ve used Elliott several times and have bee pleased. They are primarily in North Myrtle Beach.

I would highly recommend Booe Realty. I used them just about 2 years ago when some of my family came down for a wedding reception here --- and they were more than accomodating! Most of their properties are in the ';Avenues'; area of Myrtle Beach which is towards the north end of town. I love the beach in this area --- nice and wide, even at high tide! We used both the McMillian House (OF) and The Gidaway (right across the street)...nothing huge and fancy, but the price was right, they were close by, and they were clean (plus I like the fact that they are ';real'; beach houses!) They have everything from OF houses to 2nd row and off the beaten path....

    www.booerealty.com

Thanks everyone. I will check out all your suggestions. It sure can get confusing.

I got on a couple different websites but the prices were not listed so that kind of scared me...!!!

day spas in myrtle beach near long bay resort???

I will be visiting end of April and am interested in pampering myself, after all it is vacation. I would like to find somewhere, safe and creditable to get a massage or pedicure. I hear so many horror stories about spas that I hesitate to use them while out of town. I would greatly appreciate any ideas. Also is the casino cruise worth doing?? thanks for your help!

day spas in myrtle beach near long bay resort???

You may want to try the Hibiscus Spa at the Mariott at Grande Dunes...very nice! That would be the closest...one that is real nice a bit of a drive is Victoria Dianes..very nice, just off Broadway Ave in the downtown area (around 5 points).

The casino boats are fun...cheap entertainment, a good way to see the waterway. They arent anything fancy -- but for the price you cant go wrong. I prefer Sun Cruz (www.suncruz.com) They do pickup at your hotel and transport you to and from the boat (call ahead for reservations)

    Have fun! :)

    Construction??

My husband and I are planning a vacation to MB May 21-26. We want affordable and clean accommodations and Dayton House seems to be right for us. However, we do not want to be around a lot of construction and see cranes everywhere (which we%26#39;ve heard there are lots of b/c a lot of hotels are renovating or rebuilding). Is there a lot of construction going on in this area (will there be in May)? We are also thinking about the Avista Resort in North MB. Would this be a better choice for us? Also, a lot of hotels are offering a discount during this particular week. Is it a good time to visit MB or is there a reason for the discount?

    Construction??

    Dreamer:

I%26#39;m just back from MB %26amp; yes, there are a lot of active cranes %26amp; hard hat construction zones...talked to more than a few upset hotel guests who had ';construction view'; rooms. I have no clue what the situation will be in May; you need to contact the resort you are considering booking with %26amp; get some honest answers.

    Good luck.

    Construction??

In May...no cranes..lets see, I can say where not to stay that would be around the 50th ave north area (that would be Southwinds) its a mess, a probably will be most of the summer --- too bad, its a fantastic property! Not alot of construction in the 69th to 79th Ave N area...a bit across the street about 75th (where the Aloha used to be)probably Crane free at the Monteray Bay Suites, Caravelle...

Going south..Not alot of construction between 15th ave N and 26th Ave N (Dayton house is in that area)...I%26#39;d stay away from anything south of 19th Ave S...a good bit of construction that way. Not sure about up around Avista...but there is quite a bit of building going on everywhere...and like the previous poster said...best to call the resort and inquire.

As far as the dates you are planning on...you are pretty much right in between 2 bike weeks (Harley Fest and Atlantic Beach Bike Fest) so you may have to deal a bit (but not much) with both groups. Could be hotels just trying to fill between those dates with the discounted rates, that not that unusual...have a good time! :)

I know that our local place to stay Sandy Beach Resort is having construction actully they torn down the part we always stayed at now they are expanding so now we gotta find a nice resonable place to stay not no high rise place like they are adding. Any one have any suggestion to a nice place to stay?

    hotels with kitchens

Any hotels with kitchens in the rooms located in historic downtown area?

    hotels with kitchens

    Here are a few choices~ The Market Street Inn has a full kitchen in room 5, the Meeting Street Suites has a full kitchen I think in all rooms, but you might want to double check. The Doubletree Guest Suites %26amp; the Embassy Suites have kitchenette but I don%26#39;t think they are considered ';full kitchens';

    hotels with kitchens

Try The Lodge Alley Inn, which is a timeshare property that operate a hotel. Some of there rooms are two level, full kitchen, smoking, pets, children, etc....

    Help with hotel choice

Visiting Charleston in June for 2 nights for 5th anniversary (on our way to Hilton Head) and our first choice in hotel is the Renaissance but it is not available. I didn%26#39;t book it early enough and now know there is a festival in town. Any suggestions for other hotels? Sort of narrowed it down now to the Francis Marion, the Harbourview Inn, %26amp; the Holiday Inn. Like the idea of the day spa at the Francis Marion too.

Would like to be near historic area, close to everything, with a view. Looking for a nice room for the money within walking distance to shops/restaurants and nightlife.

    Thanks for any help!

    Steve

    Help with hotel choice

The festival is the 29th annual Spoleto USA Festival and it runs from May 26 - June 11. During this time, hotel rooms (esp. in the downtown area) will be at a premium. If you can get a room at the Harbourview Inn, go for it!! Next choice would be Francis Marion and then Holiday Inn. Most of the hotels will have minimum length of stays during this time esp. on the weekends.

If you are able to find a room, in addition to checking out all the historic sites, you may want to check out some of Spoleto (www.spoletousa.org) which has national and international performers or Piccolo Spoleto (www.piccolospoleto.com) which features local and regional performers...the site still needs to be updated for 2006 Season so check it out before you come to town. Piccolo has many free or less expensive events than Spoleto.

    Enjoy your visit!

    Help with hotel choice

Nice, in the Historic district and a view! That would have to be the HarbourView Inn. If they have the room for when you are coming into town then go for it, you will not be disappointed.

The Vendue Inn is in the same area. Their rates include a full breakfast, guest reception, cookies and milk, and turndown. 2 blocks from the market and near all the fun. 1-800-845-7900 Enjoy your stay.

Savannah to Myrtle Beach, what don't I want to miss?

We are two couples in our 50%26#39;s flying into Savannah,GA, March 30th, flying back home April 7th. Bringing our golf clubs, (but are not serious golfers). We want to stay and see Charleston, Myrtle Beach and spend some time in Savannah before we fly home. My question is, What don%26#39;t I want to miss in these three towns? We%26#39;re from Oregon and have never been to the East coast. I don%26#39;t want to take my friends to places that are just tourist traps. What wouldn%26#39;t you want to miss seeing or doing in one are all three of these historic towns?

Savannah to Myrtle Beach, what don't I want to miss?

The main thing to do or see in Savannah is the Historic District. This is the height of the blooming season. It%26#39;s quite a treat. Take a walk through the center of the District. It%26#39;s about one mile. Maybe take a riding tour. If you have time, go out to Fort Pulaski.

You could spend that entire week in Charleston and Savannah. I would skip Mrytle Beach unless you are going for the golf. The beach is great, but it%26#39;s just one hotel after another. Brookgreen Gardens is a few miles south of Myrtle Beach, so if you do go, try to take it in too. It should be spectacular that time of year.

Savannah to Myrtle Beach, what don't I want to miss?

We are planning our 4th trip to Daufuskie Island. check out daufuskie island resort. You may want to consider a day trip from Savannah there is a ferry. The island is beautiful. Also check out Tybee Island for an afternoon visit.

We absolutely loved Middleton Place Plantation just outside Charleston. We were there last year in early April and the azaleas and gardens were gorgeous!

Plan to spend a good part of the day and do the coach tour around the property which takes you into areas that aren%26#39;t accessible otherwise.

Hello- There are 28 of us travelling over from London in April, playing golf and staying at the Palmetto Dunes resort. On Thursday 27th we are looking to hold our presentation dinner/awards night.Would anybody know of a restaurant that could offer a seperate room to the rest of their diners, as there will be the usual jovial banter between us. It does not have to be fancy, whats more important is %26#39;value for money%26#39;.

    Thanks

    Golf dinner/presentation for 28, any reccomendations ?

I would suggest the Old Oyster Factory. I%26#39;ve been there several times and even went to a family reunion dinner hosted there. They accomodate private parties and they have great food. Beautiful view too!

    Golf dinner/presentation for 28, any reccomendations ?

I still think you should call Alexanders to see if you can get the bar!

Its in Palmetto Dunes, where you will be staying and has the ambience you seem to want.

Hilton Head is a resort town. It is our main industry. It draws families and our local restaurants on the whole do not do private parties.

I have mentioned to you previously some that do.

    Juleps, Le Normandie, Jaxx, Th

    Snow Crab Legs

Who has the best crab legs ? Preferably all you can eat.

    Snow Crab Legs

Crabby Mikes in Surfside. They have all you can eat 120 item buffet. They have Prime ribs, to seafood, to pasta, to salads. THe avg price for an adult is $21.00 and $11.00 or under for kids. There is usely a wait in the summer time but it is well worth it.

    Snow Crab Legs

Giant Crab,Crabby Mikes, and Captain Georges get my vote.

I agree with TonyMik...especially if you are looking for all you can eat! Crabcatchers up in Little River does some great ones out on their deck....

I%26#39;ve always been a fan of Benjamins on Restaurant Row. Look for a coupon and go for the early bird special before it gets crazy. I skip lunch, then pile the crab on top of a grilled steak. Talk about decadent!

    Kevin

We used to eat at Bejimens all the time then about 7 or 8 years ago they got new management and the staff was not as friendly and the food was not as good but we are thinking about trying it again.

Definately...Crabcatchers in Little River has the best

You may have a point CBR on the staff. I was there with my family in July and the staff paid little attention to our table. Granted it was busy season but an early sitting. I%26#39;ll be checking it out again on our annual golf trip in May.

    Crescent Keyes

We are looking into a family vacation next summer- possibly staying at Crescent Keyes. There will be 6 adults and 3 children (all 3 and under). We have not been to the Myrtle Beach area for several years. We don%26#39;t want to stay anywhere too commercialized, as the children are quite young. However, we don%26#39;t want to be far away from grocery shopping, retaurants, etc.

Our biggest interests are a nice beach and pools and good places to eat. Could anyone offer any feedback on Crescent Keyes? Are there any other locations that would better fit what we are looking for in a vacation? I appreciate any feedback anyone can offer!

    Crescent Keyes

Great new condo - Great Location in North Myrtle Beach. Close to all major attractions and golf courses. You may want to check out the Vaction Rental By Owners web site for

    the best rates.

    Crescent Keyes

    Jen,

We stayed at the Crescent Keyes last August and it would be a perfect fit for your needs.

We had (4) adults and (4) young children (4 and under). The condo was brand new and very clean and nicely furnished. EASILY the nicest condo in the immediate area. The pool and lazy rivers were very nice also and they have a kiddie pool too.

We were a little let down with local dining though, never seemed to find any REALLY good places to eat with fresh seafood. We did have a good meal in Calabash, NC, which is about 15 mintues North. North Myrtle has become a lot more commercialized the last several years, with a mini-Daytona feel to it. The beach was typical for the Atlantic, but they groomed it nor cleaned it during the week we were there.

I%26#39;d suggest you try to get to the rental office a little early, for when we got there at 3:00 (check in time), there was a line around the building. Luckily, it only took about 20 minutes to get our keys.

    Brad,

Thanks so much for your help. It is much appreciated!

    raycerv,

Thanks for the advice. Do you happen to know the web address for the Vacation Rental by Owners?

    The website is www.vrbo.com

    Hi Jen!

Used to live in North Myrtle and would suggest Marker 350 in Cherry Grove for fine dining where everythign is FRESH (ny husband to be was a sous chef there)-- not a kid friendly restaurant though -- adnthe Sea Merchant Restaurant in North Myrtle -- looks are deceiving -- excellent food and family friendly -- really nice owners -- and not usually long wait --

good luck and have fun! It has been afew years though (we left in 2000)......

    Jen,

Did you already find a place to stay?

I highly recommend Crescent Shores as the bedrooms are larger. In the four bedroom units two of the bedrooms accomodate 2 queen beds in each and the other two bedrooms each have a king bed. Still less than 2 years old and very nice amenities. You%26#39;ll notice on VRBO.com that Crescent Shores generally books up quicker than all the other condos-there%26#39;s a reason for that! Mine is listing 63176-you can see June and July are already pretty full.

I think I messed up when I was trying to reply to this message. Sorry if this is a duplicate. My wife and I have been going to Myrtle Beach for the past 28 years. We usually stay at Compass Cove and slide in the week between the Harley and Black bikers. This year we have been asked to go June 3 through the 10 and stay at Crescent Keys. I have been looking at the posting and it looks fine. We will be staying with another couple, their 16 year old son and a friend of his. Are there things that I need to know before we book? We want an ocean front condo and with the boys we obviously need some room. Any hidden fees that we need to know about?

i found the place to be great..we%26#39;d go back

Best fishing trip out of HHI ?

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good fishing trip from HHI? I think a 1/2 day trip would be what we are looking for.

Best fishing trip out of HHI ?

I%26#39;m also looking for a 1/2 day deep sea fishing trip.

I don%26#39;t know too much about these trips.

Do they provide the fishing gear and bait.

What fish does one usually catch during the July-August season?

How far do these boats go out?

Does anyone have any suggestions on casinos?

    Thanks,

    Spring Break Suggestions Please!!!

There is a group of 5 of us headed down March 8th to the 16th. Were from westery, NY. Were all over 21 also, two guys and three girls. The guys are golfing sunday, monday and tuesday. Were playing The Wizard, King%26#39;s North, and Pine Lakes. Who knows what the girls will be doing, probably struttin their stuff on the beach looking for guys.

I guess basically i%26#39;m looking for some local inside information on best places to eat, best places to go out at night, things we must do while were down there, etc....

Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

    Spring Break Suggestions Please!!!

I think I like the girls plan! ha! Even tho%26#39; you guys have some great courses booked!

Great places to eat --- try Liberty Tap Room and Grille (not the one at Broadway at the Beach --even tho%26#39; its good) good local young crowd too. A number of restaurants in Murrells Inlet with quite a few of them offering live music, one of my favorites is Hot Fish Club -- great outdoor gazebo with live music! Magnolias at about 20th Ave N and Ocean blvd is a great breakfast and lunch buffet...SoHo on 21st is good for Sushi..we have soooo many restaurants..check out the thread that gonefishin has..

Of course you have Broadway At The Beach for eating and entertainment options...great area called Celebrity Square that has a number of clubs anywhere from dueling pianos to high energy dance....good sportsbar is 5%26#39;oclock somewhere...check out a great website at:

    www.strandmagazine.com

    Have fun!!! :)

    Spring Break Suggestions Please!!!

Tell your female friends that they had better bring warm clothes to ';strut'; in- it is FREEZING that time of the year! I wouldn%26#39;t be in a bathing suit at only 60 degrees! I know what cold is- from New York, too! Like spit-into-Canada, New York!

Yea, but you know --- at the beach, the sun shining..the ocean waves crashing --- who cares what the temp is! Heck, we already have people in the water this year! And if you get out of the wind...its really not that bad...but be a ';warm cool'; :)

  • Child care at any resorts?

I am looking for any resorts in Myrtle Beach that offer child care/kids club for my 2 year old. The only 1 I have found so far is Sand Dunes, but have seen some unfavorable reviews about them. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Child care at any resorts?

If you can afford it, I suggest bringing your own sitter. When I was in high school, I did this one three spearate occasions (pay=room, board, and $200). I found that the resort sitters really didn%26#39;t care or follow directions, and one across the hall from us lost a child for over two hours, but didn%26#39;t call the parents because they didn%26#39;t want to get in trouble. Luckily, we found her at the arcade finally, but I will NEVER hire someone I don%26#39;t know well to watch my children at a hotel. They just don%26#39;t have the personal investment as your own sitter from home would. Good luck.

    Child care at any resorts?

You may want to contact the conceirge desk at some of the properties that you are looking at. I know that there are a few agencies in the area that cater to this need.

The only one I can think of right now is Babysitter Solution 888-488-9282. They are YMCA certified, and do background checks on all their sitters. Good Luck! :)

    Any Ideas?

Looking at maybe going to myrtle beach this summer for a family reunion. I haven%26#39;t been there in some 15 years. Any suggestions about where to stay? We have a lot of little kids with us ages 2-8. Looking for something that is in a fun, safe, clean area. Any suggestions? Your advice is greatly valued and appreciated.

    Any Ideas?

My family and I have been traveling to Myrtle Beach for years. We often go in a large group, so finding something that makes everyone happy was difficult at first. Then, we found the Breakers Resort. There is something for EVERYONE, it is quiet, and family friendly. Everyone from the ten month old to my 68 year old uncle found something they enjoyed. One colder day, we had an entire indoor pool to ourselves for four hours! One suggestion- if you don%26#39;t have a car or have people that can%26#39;t walk down the beach for an extended period of time in your party, don%26#39;t stay in the North Tower- all the indoor pools, restaurant, and bar are split between the other two resort buildings. They are always updating their rooms, so no worry of ten year old furniture. We have been in the same room three years in a row and it has looked different every time!

    Any Ideas?

Last summer we had a family reunion at the Carolina Winds hotel which is in a great neighborhood at the north end of Myrtle Beach. There were 42 of us total with 15 kids under the age of 14, 2- 16 yr olds, and 3- 22 yr olds. The staff was VERY accomodating for this large group. One night, they were kind enough to open their resturant (which is normally NOT open for dinner, just breakfast and lunch) and they prepared us a great buffet just for our crowd. The hotel has a nice outdoor pool, lazy river, indoor pool (although it is rather small) and two hot tubs and an arcade. The location of the hotel is great; very convenient to grocery stores, shopping and resturants.

No matter where you stay though, the kids will not be bored, because they will have each other to play with.

    Have fun!

I%26#39;ll bet the kids would love a hotel with a waterpark. I%26#39;ve seen several of these; one is just to the north of Long Bay (beachfront at 73rd St. in the north end). Maybe someone can give names. Looks like even the grownups have fun at these.

That would be either the Ocean Dunes or the Sand Dunes (both part of the Sands Resorts)...they have a great water park right there at the complex, and pretty new property too. The beach in this area is really great --- nice and wide and clean. A number of options for meals, grocery within 2 miles, bus stops in front of the hotels if you want to go into the downtown area...

Have fun...Myrtle Beach is a great place for a family reunion! So much to do! :)

    Coral Beach Resort

I booked reservations for Coral Beach in June. I have 2 teenage girls. Is this a good choice? I%26#39;ve read many good reviews and a few not so good. One person%26#39;s room was broken into and was told it happens a lot. Has anyone had trouble at this place. Are the rooms as clean as people say. What about sound proof. I%26#39;ve read a few comments about the walls being thin. Thanks

    Coral Beach Resort

I think just about every hotel in Myrtle Beach has had both good and bad reviews...just goes to show you cant please everyone all the time....

The Coral Beach is a great family vacation resort. They have recently updated both inside and out, the place looks good! Of course they have all the bells and whistles that most teenagers like --- and the pool area is great! With live entertainment!

    Have fun! :)

    Coral Beach Resort

Perfect Choice. It is about the ONLY place that we stay in.

We have stayed at CORAL BEACH For at least 15 years (SINCE THE FIRST YEAR IT OPENED)and and enjoy the pool areas most as well as the poolside bar and grill. We only had a problem once with the noise from college students on spring break but all the other times were very family oriented. The rooms have always been clean for a beach resort(and we have stayed at many others at Myrtle Beach) we have never found anything more suiting for us.Anything we needed was always taken care of quickly. As far as the walls being thin we have never been bothered by anyone next to us and have never had anyone break into the room but we always use the room safe or leave any valuables in the car. Security has always been present on the grounds. We don%26#39;t normally eat there except for lunch poolside ther are just too many good places to eat. Sharon from Shelby,NC

Thank you! I feel much better about my choice.

    Hotels for people under 21

Hi, I was planning on going to Myrtle Beach for spring break but am having trouble finding hotels that allow 18 yr olds to get rooms. Are there any that do allow that? And if so can you give me a list?

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    Hotels for people under 21

I am by no means an expert, but I was told over the phone by another hotel to try the Sea Dip or the Boardwalk Beach Resort. I am sure there are others. I think some may require an extra deposit at check in and with the boardwalk, they have a behavior contract to sign. Hope this helps.

    Hotels for people under 21

    Hey Ryan,

Ditto the above post from princess...and to add to that list is Cadillac Court, Court Capri, Holiday Inn Express, Sandcastle...and I%26#39;m sure a few others. As princess stated, most do require a ';security'; deposit at check-in, so be sure to inquire when looking at the various hotels. Some of the deposits will be based on the room only, or it will be a ';per person deposit';. And some properties do have you ';acknowledge'; the rules by signing a ';behavior contract';. I know this sounds like a lot of ropes to jump thru just to come have fun at the beach....but....

One place that I know of that rents to those 18 and up without a deposit or a contract is the Sheraton at the Convention Center. They will only do a $50 deposit if you are paying cash...nothing at all if the room is on a credit card. This place isnt ocean front, but you do have ocean views...its really nice and they do have a shuttle service that will take you to Broadway at the Beach and to the oceanfront (beach is less than 1/2 mile and Broadway is about 1 mile).

Hope all this helps! Have a good time! :)

  • Where to go what to do in SC

My husband and I are going to South Caroling from May 27 - June 2 2006. We are planning on staying at a friends home in Cheraw as our ';homebase';. We want to see different parts of the state. I think we will stay overnight one night in Charleston. Any suggestions of places we should go in SOuth Carolina? I also was reading about the dolphin encounter boats...any good companies and is it worth doing?

    Thanks!!!

Where to go what to do in SC

Charleston is number 1, but Myrtle Beach and the Spartanburg area are great as well. If you are spending the night in Charleston, I would recommend a historic downtown hotel. We have had several friends stay at the Mills House and loved it. You can walk all over from there and there are so many outstanding restaurants you may want to stay longer. Take a carriage tour as it gives you a view of the historic city without walking aimlessly and isn%26#39;t too expensive. The drivers are very knowledgeable.

Not sure about the dolphin encounters. You can pretty much see them anytime in the harbour in Charleston. Waterfront park is a good place to watch them or down by the SC Aquarium (one of the best I have ever been to).

Spartanburg is in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains and there are several state parks that have hiking trails and camping. If you like to walk, this is a lot of fun.

Myrtle Beach is known for golf and beaches. If you want to do it, Myrtle Beach probably has it. Very touristy, but we still like to go. Be patient with traffic there. Bumper to bumper everywhere, especially along Ocean Blvd.

Any other questions, let me know. Especially about Charleston.

i%26#39;m staying at this condo in june and i%26#39;ve heard many problems about high tide and that there is no beach. is there a sandy beach there during the day to relax on. this condo is on 5800 n. ocean blvd. cherry grove section of myrtle beach

    thanks

    xanadu ii

Xanadu 2 had a face lift last year and many of the owner%26#39;s also updated there units. as for the beach at high tide it can be little to no beach. but the rest of the time the beach is very wide. its a nice part of the beach. not as busy as the south end. They have a nice pool area with loung chairs, so if there is no beach you can relax there.

    xanadu ii

The problem with the tide is all up and down the beach , not just there. It will all depend on when high tide is. If it falls mid-day, there will be an issue. We vacationed along there for 16 years and you just learn to work with. The beautiful wide beach will reappear at low tide. Check the tide charts for June.

    Sea Island on the Beach

Does anyone know anything about this new resort?

    Sea Island on the Beach

You may already have this, but their website is www.seaislandonthebeach.com. I know they%26#39;re supposed to open May 1 and that some of their units (don%26#39;t know how many) are privately owned, but not all. From all accounts, it looks and sounds like a beautiful place with nice-sized and well-appointed units, although not inexpensive. Depending on what type of accommodations you need, their website offers specials, although they appear to apply only to their 1 bedroom unit with 2 full beds. All the units are furnished and decorated by the resort, even though there are some private owners. We%26#39;re planning a trip to MB this summer and currently have reservations at Kingston Plantation, but in a condo that%26#39;s not oceanfront. I%26#39;d really love to book at the Sea Island, but I%26#39;m waiting to see if some of the private owners list their condos because it%26#39;s usually less expensive than booking through the resort. So far, I haven%26#39;t seen really anything. If you obtain additional or different information, please post it as I am also interested in learning what I can about the Sea Island. Thanks!

    Sea Island on the Beach

The Sea Island will open in May afer going thru a total rebuild. They have been a resort in Myrtle Beach for a number of years (one of the older properties here) located near where the old Ocean Forest Resort used to be (torn down in the late 70%26#39;s). Its in an area we call the ';cabana'; section of Myrtle Beach -- because of the numerous little cabin like structures that dot the beach side of Ocean Blvd in this 5 block long area.

Ditto on all of the above post. I haven%26#39;t heard yet if the privately owned condos need to utilize the hotel management rental system or if they can rent on their own. I know at the Marina Inn at Grande Dunes(another luxury property opening in August)will also have privately owned condos that can either be put into the hotel system or they can rent on their own....but if they owner decides to rent on their own, they cannot use the name ';Marina Inn';. So not sure if this may also be the case at Sea Island.

All that said, I think it will be a great ';new/old'; addition to the beach front...their European style of operation is somewhat unique in this area...the staff were wonderful before the renov. and I%26#39;m sure they wont be anything less than excellent when they reopen. The restaurant is amazing! The building is beautiful, the colors are awseome, and the beach in that area is one of the better ones in the area!

Have a great time! I%26#39;ll keep you posted if I find out anything more! :)

    Myrtle in April

16 of us are heading to Myrtle Beach the 1st week in April for a golf getaway...staying at Grand Shores...any opinions on our housing?...next looking for the local favorites for dinner. any suggestions?

    Myrtle in April

Love the area that Grande Shores is in! The beach in that area is one of the best. Grande Shores is to the north end of the group of hotels in that area. They are a fairly new property, nice rooms, great balconies. I think you%26#39;ll like it there.

    Dinner options

less than 3 miles from resort:

    River City Cafe (burgers/sandwiches)

Liberty Tap Room %26amp; Grille(local golf hangout)

    City Bar (tapas/late nite)

    Villa Mare (great Italian)

    Collector%26#39;s (more upscale/great desserts)

    Villa Katrina%26#39;s (upscale Tex-Mex)

    Palms Bistro (upscale/good late night)

Cheeseburger in Paradise (Buffet themed/good entertainment)

    Bonefish Grill (great seafood)

    Caraba%26#39;s (Italian)

    Fiesta Mexicana (great Mexican!)

    Garcia%26#39;s (great Tex-Mex)

    Other GREAT places:

Anywhere in Murrells Inlet! Great Seafood, Great entertainment --- need to plan at least one evening to head down that way and sample some really great local flavour! Only a 20 - 30 minute drive! And well worth it!

Little River --- another great local place is Crab Catchers! Great local catches...and the fish fry is fantastic! Plus you can set on the outdoor deck and watch the action on the waterway or listen to the entertainment...and the owners are from up that way, Wisconsin! Ask for Tim or Tony when you go in!

There are sooooo many restaurants here in the area...these are just a few! There is another thread on this forum you may want to check out that lists a number of restaurants!

Have fun! Sitting across from the Grande Dunes Golf Course as I write this! Greens are looking good! Its sunny, about 70, with a pretty good breeze from the south! (Just had to write that! :) )

    Bermuda Sands

Help! We have planned our first family vacation in 10yrs for next week. At the recommendation of a very good friend, we booked the Bermuda Sands. Reading the reviews now, however, has me very scared. Is it really that filthy with bugs? After driving 14hrs with two kids, I do *not want to be disgusted. I know this is not necessarily a ';review'; site but I need opinions from anyone at this point, we%26#39;re leaving Sunday..

    Bermuda Sands

The Bermuda Sands did a bit of renovation maybe back in 2003. The outside looks decent, but not sure on how much remodeling they did on the rooms (lobby is nice). It is an older property with not as many bells and whistles as some other options. With it being older, and some of the reviews on this site, you may want to reconsider, especially after driving that length of time. We used to stay at a small property for a number of years before we moved to the beach, it was one of the oldest on the beach, and I cant remember it having bugs, but it wouldn%26#39;t have been everyone%26#39;s cup of tea either...but the staff made the place. So that be why the friend gave you the recommendation.

If you are leaving this Sunday, and if you arent ';locked into'; your stay at the Bermuda...maybe spend your first night there and see...you may be fine. If not, it will give you a chance to check out the area, and possibly relocate to another property if need be. Other option would be to check out some of the reviews of other properties to the right...some that are in the general area that Bermuda Sands is are the Holiday Inn Oceanfront, Tropical Winds, Coral Beach isnt real far from there...just to name a few.

    Hope this helps! :)

    Bermuda Sands

Thank you for your suggestions. We decided to change hotels and it looks to be so much better. We lost $35 because of booking time but hey, I can%26#39;t sleep with cockroaches either! Now...the drive ;) Again, thanks for your help/suggestions.

Where did you book this time?

We ended up staying at the Tropical Winds.

what was your opinion of the Tropical winds? we are planning a trip in July and that is the place I think I have finally settled on!!! we have 3 children so we need something bigger than just a room, and we definetly want ocean front. I appreicate any comments about the place!!

I posted a review under Tropical Winds if you want to search that. In summary, we liked it. It%26#39;s not some 5 star hotel but for a family that won%26#39;t spend a ton of time in the actual room, it was fine.

Sea Island on the Beach - Privately Owned Condos?

Does anyone know if the condo units at Sea Island on the Beach privately/individually owned or is the Sea Island a resort hotel? I haven%26#39;t seen anything yet, but I%26#39;m wondering if these condos can be rented through private owners.

Sea Island on the Beach - Privately Owned Condos?

First off, to directly answer your question, I have not seen any info on the new Sea Island being available as condos through individual owners. I just completed extensive research on MB hotels and narrowed it to: Southwinds, Sea Island, Hampton Inn, and Marriott Grande Dunes. The Marriott didn%26#39;t have a suite available for our week in July, and the regular, oceanfront room was over $300! The SOuthwinds had no 1 or 2 br condos available, so originally we had booked at the Hampton for a suite for $260/night. THen we found out about the new Sea Island opening in May and were able to get a great deal through their website www.seaislandinn.com on their SPECIALS page (upper right hand corner of their home page). We%26#39;re getting a larger suite, that%26#39;s brand new, in a beautiful brand new resort that%26#39;s $70 less than what we were going to be paying at the Hampton, and there are some other perks included. They have a few different specials, so check them all out to see what suits you best. All of their marketing seems to indicate that they are an all suites resort, I haven%26#39;t seen any mention of condo ownership. I%26#39;d post to MBConcierge directly on this one, or call the Sea Island directly. When Icalled to verify that all of their facilities would be up and running by July 1st, the representative that I spoke to was very friendly, and I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;d be able to answer all of your questions. The place does look beautiful, and we%26#39;re really looking forward to our stay there. Good luck with your planning and have a great trip!

Sea Island on the Beach - Privately Owned Condos?

I emailed Sea Island and received a response. Apparently some of the units are privately owned, and the owners may choose to rent them independent of the resort. I was advised, however, that booking through the resort would guarantee full service (daily housekeeping, towels/linens, cookware, etc.), things I suppose one might need to ask about when renting from the individual owner. If this is the case, there will probably be more offerings in the future from individual owners. I will be keeping my eyes open as I%26#39;m still undecided on our plans for this summer, but as always, will be asking many questions regarding what is included and what is not in the rate. I currently have summer reservations (tentative) at one of the lodges in Kingston Plantation through a private owner who was very open and honest with all the information I needed, but not everyone who owns there has been as forthcoming about the potential extra charges that exist if you don%26#39;t book through the resort itself or through an owner who uses the resort%26#39;s rental program. Buyer Beware!

This is not that unusual for any of the new properties (or renov.) here at the beach. Most are sitting aside X number of units as ';hotel'; units and then selling the remainder, with the option to that buyer at putting in back into a rental program. Most of the more ';upscale'; places are doing all the appointments in the condos (furnishings, colors, appliances, etc) so one condo doesn%26#39;t ';outdo'; another....but I do agree that if you are renting from a private owner, you do need to question what is included, and what services you are entitled to.
